Maria Labo is the most disturbing modern Filipino legend, and unlike older aswang stories it has a biography: an ordinary woman who went overseas for work, came back changed, and did something no family could survive. The scar across her face is where the name comes from.

The legend
In the standard telling, Maria was a Filipina who went abroad as a domestic worker to support her family. Something happened to her there — the accounts vary, and most describe it as a curse she took on or was given.
She returned home. One night her husband discovered that she had killed and cooked their own children. In his rage he struck her across the face with a bolo, and the scar gave her the name: labo, from the blade.
Why this legend is recent
Older aswang belief has no origin story — the creature simply is one. Maria Labo is built the other way round, starting from a recognisable life: overseas work, separation from children, money sent home, a return.
