Filipino Urban Legends

The creatures, ghosts and folk beliefs that have haunted Filipino nights for centuries — and the stories we build on them.

Philippine folklore is not one tradition. It is hundreds of local ones that overlap, contradict each other and change names between provinces. An aswang in Panay is not described the same way as an aswang in Bicol, and the same creature can be a warning to children in one town and a genuine explanation for an illness in the next.

These pages set out what each belief actually holds, where it is recorded most strongly, and what the traditional defences against it are. Where an origin is unknown or disputed, we say so rather than filling the gap. Folklore is kept separate from the fiction we write around it — each page links to both.
