The legend
The standard version: a pale woman in a white dress, sometimes described as bloodied, flags down a taxi on Balete Drive late at night. The driver takes the fare. At some point in the trip he looks in the mirror and the back seat is empty.
Almost every Philippine White Lady account shares that structure — she is encountered through a windscreen or a mirror, by someone working alone at night. Balete Drive is simply the address the legend settled on.

Balete Drive is a quiet residential stretch in New Manila lined with large old houses and the balete trees it is named for. The balete is the Philippine strangler fig, and it is the tree folklore has always been most uneasy about, because it grows around a host tree and leaves a hollow braided trunk behind.
